What is Chess Club?

The Chess Club is an extracurricular, afterschool club with monthly meetings and one annual countywide competition for selected students.

 

How do I join the Chess Club?

There are no tryouts for Chess Club, however, the number of students able to participate in the annual competition is limited.  Participants in this club develop logic, problem solving, and visualization skills by using Chess as a hands-on approach to learning.  Additionally, students learn algebraic and geometric concepts using Chess as a game model.  Any interested student should contact Mrs. Klompstra for addtional information.

Curricular connection:

Chess is connected to the mandated curriculum in a variety of ways.  It is a simulation that develops the mind with skills in probability theory, planning ahead, and analytic skills to anticipate possible scenarios and responses.  

While Chess connects to all grade levels, two specific connections to mathematics (Grade 7)-Statistics and Probability are as follows:

  • 7.SP.7  Develop a probability model and use it to find probabilities of events.  Compare probabilities from a model to observed frequencies; if the agreement is not good, explain possible sources of the discrepancy.
  • 7.SP.8  Find probabilities of compund events using organized lists, tables, tree diagrams, and simulations

 

NATIONAL MATH STANDARDS ADDRESSED:

  • NM-ALG.1:  Understand patterns, relations, and functions
  • NM-ALG.2:  Represent and analyze mathematical situations and structures using algebraic symbols
  • NM-GEO.1:  Analyze characteristics and properties of two- and three-dimensional geometric shapes and develop mathematical arguments about geometric relationships
  • NM-GEO.2:  Specify locations and describe spatial relationships using coordinate geometry and other representational systems

NATIONAL READING STANDARDS ADDRESSED:

  • NL-ENG.K-12.1:  Apply a wide range of strategies to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and appreciate texts
  • NL-ENG.K12.6:  Apply knowledge of language structure, language conventions, media techniques, figurative language, and genre to create critique and discuss print and non-print texts
  • NL-ENG.K-12.10:  Applying non-English perspectives to develop competency in the English Language Arts (ELA), and to develop understanding of content across the curriculum for students where English is not the first language
