Attention 8th Grade Parents:

There are many exciting activities occurring in the upcoming weeks for our 8th grade students. The high school registration process is an exciting time for parents and students as we look towards the next chapter of a student’s academic career.
Faculty members from Southwest High School will be at Trexler on Wednesday, March 23rd beginning at 8:30am to speak about course selection and registration. Students will receive registration materials and a brief overview of high school procedures. Richlands High School hosted a similar meeting on March 2nd and provided registration materials at that time. Students attending both Richlands High School and Southwest High School are encouraged to bring back their registration materials in a timely manner.
The next phase of preparing for the transition to high school are parent meetings. The Richlands High Parent Meeting is scheduled for Monday, March 20th in the auditorium at 6:30pm and the Southwest High Parent Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 29th in the auditorium at 6:00pm. Information about graduation requirements, academics, and extra curricula opportunities will be discussed at the parent meetings.

The CTE Showcase will also be held on Tuesday, March 21st for all 8th grade students. The Career Technical Education Showcase is an academic, single day event/field trip open to all 8th graders. The event is organized by central office staff, CTE teachers, and current high school students throughout Onslow County. The showcase presents demonstrations and displays of what Career and Technical Education has to offer rising 9th graders.

Realizing that not all students share the same interests and career goals or learn in the same fashion, Onslow County Schools developed programs to meet the diverse needs of our students. Some of these academic programs are not available at all Onslow County high schools. CONTROLLED ENROLLMENT affords students the opportunity to apply for a specialized program that may not be offered at their home school. When a student successfully completes the necessary paperwork for the Controlled Enrollment application, as well as any required paperwork and interview from the second school, and is accepted into the specialized program and the parents accept the placement, the student may become a member of the second school for the remainder of the school year. They must be enrolled in the courses associated with the specialized program for the duration of the time they are at the second school. Additionally, students will have to meet requirements unique to each specialized program. Transportation must be provided by the parents. The following programs are open to freshman as part of Controlled Enrollment:

• International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - JHS
• International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme - JHS
• Culinary Arts Academy - NHS
• Covey Leadership Series/Academy - WOHS
• Advanced/Applied Technologies Initiative - NHS
• Advanced Automotive/Transportation Technologies Initiative – SWHS
• Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC)-NHS

On Thursday, March 23rd at 8:00am the Northside High School AFJROTC will present to 8th grade students about this unique opportunity. The AFJROTC program educates and trains high school cadets in citizenship, promotes community service, instills responsibility, character, and self-discipline, and provides instruction in air and space fundamentals. The program is grounded in the Air Force core values of integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do. The curriculum emphasizes the Air Force heritage and traditions, the development of flight, applied flight sciences, military aerospace policies, and space exploration. It is open to both males and females, complimenting all phases of the high school curriculum.

Controlled Enrollment programs are only available by application. Interested students must complete an application located on page 93 of a Secondary Course Study Guide located on the student’s 1:1 laptop. If you have any questions about high school registration or Controlled Enrollment, please feel free to call the school.
